WD ShareSpace - RAID 5

June 27th, 2011, 5:42

Hey,

Long time reader 1st time poster...well third post I think but first actual question :)

Has anyone had any experience with these WD ShareSpace NAS style setups? I've tried a few things but it's really hard with no knowledge of how the RAID was built. Does anyone know the block size or anything that may help please. Maybe which way the order runs. Top to bottom or bottom to top?

The customer bough another ShareSpace to try and move the drives to this. It did not work. He was able to take the new drives and put them in the old enclosure and it all worked perfectly though. It contains 4 x 1TB HDD's.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated : )

Thanks!

Hi,
First of all I think that the operation made by your customer was really a bad idea; if you don't know the configuration of the RAID it's possible that the new controller write data in a different manner and overwrite your data.

What you could do is to open the images of the hdds with an editor like winhex and analize the stream to detect the raid chunck, size and direction..

Ha , ha , ha, I harassed poor Dr Kiev with a RAID 0 only a month ago. I did not have the heart to bother him again so soon.

Good point about the controller Italian-Recovery, that did not even cross my mind, I'm hoping no damage was done only because he was able to swap the new drives into the old enclosure and it worked. I guess I can assume the setup and controller were identical due to this...I hope :(

I did get a PM from hddguy with some good information so I'll start with some of his settings first...

Thank you all for your replies :)

Cheers! :(
