Solution for repair my PCB (old seagate hdd)

Hi all,

I have a problem with my Seagate U6 model st320410a 20go

A chip is burned, and I want to know what are my options. Change the chip or change the pcb (which is complicated given the age of the hdd)
For the story, I just connect the drive externally with a USB cable, and is the result. (I tested the cable with another drive and it works)

Most of the times when this IC is burned Preamp gets damaged as well .

90% killed preamp, but you'll never know until you check it... :(

What they are saying is that the preamp on the head stack is most likely damaged as well. i.e. the heads would need to be swapped for a working set. i.e. cleanroom work.

If that is the case then a new PCB won't get your data back unfortunately, you would need a professional data recovery service.

If preamp is damaged and you replace PCB you could do more bad than good.

Better to get this analysed by a professional if the data there is important.

It does not look like a chip that's burned, more like a component on the board that had been overvolted. that big black thing that looks like it was split.

and the capasiter, if that what it is, beside it should be okay, just covered in suit.

The burnt component (1R0J) is a 1 ohm resistor. Its believe function is to sense the current in the DC-DC converter comprising the adjacent 4R7 coil and FDFS2P102A FETKY. I suspect that the MOSFET chopper within the FETKY may be shorted Drain-to-Source.

I believe the DC-DC converter may provide a negative supply (-5V?) for the preamp.

If it were my drive, I would have a go at repairing the board, but I would test the board on its own before reinstalling it on the drive.

I'd also verify that the FAN1537PA dual linear regulator is producing +3.3V and +2.5V.

Thank you everyone for all these opinions, I think trying to find a new pcb at best replace the firmware and see. If not too bad
