My HDD Smoking

July 21st, 2011, 8:48

Hi guys,
I am new to the HDDGURU forum but I have read some of the valuable comments on HDD drives issues. I have a HDD problem and I need some suggestions.
While I was adding a 2nd HDD and also cleaning up the inside of the case. I had to do some disconnection. So I think when I re-connected the HDD, it wasn't in all the way. So there was partial contact. When I turned on the PC, it fried the TVS protection diode on the PCB board. At this point I knew there is problem because it was smoking. So I ordered the exact same PCB online and replaced the original one.
Surprisingly the board is smoking as well but the diode is still intact on the new HDD.

Does anyone know why this is happening? Even if the new PCB board is not working, it shouldn't be smoking. I really need to get the data on the HDD. Please help.

Thanks

Best Case: Your PSU is very poor.

Worst case: You have fried the preamplifier within the HDD

Either way, you should be very careful how you decide to deal with this...

What is the PSU? Can it be fixed?
And the preamplifier, I assume its inside the HDD case. Not the PCB. Which means I need contact a Pro.
Is this accurate?

hi SISCO
PSU is power supply, preamp is inside the HDA so i think yes is better to contact a PRO.
