Looking for tips on troubleshooting and repair- Western Digital Caviar 160 GB EIDE drive

Logic board - 2060-701266-001 REV A



1. How can I check the logic board other than visual observation for burnt components (no noticeable smell when it failed) . How ?

2. Replacement of logic board - If find hard a used drive of the same type , what numbers above must match to allow me the use the donor board changing the transferring the ROM chip or having it reprogrammed ?


If a replacement board doesn't work , I will just hold on to the drive until I can afford to pay a DR pro for their equipment and expertise .

when you the a circuit board use a strip of electrical tape to protect the head connectors, & if the Drive Spins then. go ahead with the NVRAM chip swap. if it doesn't spin then you more than likely have a motor problem. but remember to properly match the PCB. or else it won't work.
check the Circuit Board with Voltage Meter. & check to see if you have reading on your voltage rails. i usually remove the PCB then apply power to the PCB & check for Readings on the Motor Connector, & the HDA connector on the PCB, if you get no voltage start checking on power Connector & see if you can follow the Voltage path,

NVRAM is for IBM/Hitachi drives. WD has a ROM chip.

If your current PCB is dead and needs replacing you should match the PCB number, 2060-701266-001 REV A in your case. Also check that the main controller chip is the same. Swap over the 8-pin ROM chip at U12 from patient to donor and if the PCB was the only fault, then your drive should work again. Obviously there are some risks involved.

Even if the motor does spin up you are not home and dry just yet.
There is a high probability the head preamp is damaged which would require physical intervention, a headstack swap in a clean room environment. This would have to be checked BEFORE any intended pcb swap because a damaged preamp could also damage any new replacement pcb.

So how can one check the head preamp ? Does checking it require the DR pro /clean room too ?

good eye on that one, kinda didn't want to bombard with to much precaution, but yes that is correct that a damaged PreAmp will also damage the PCB.. i think i saw a method of using a Meter to check for the Preamp condition, i just don't remember where.

Any other connections to to check vor voltage ? resistance ?

Any other links for testing diodes on the WD etc ?

Are the the voltages checked with a PSU connection only (or does the board need to be connected to live motherboard via EIDE cable too - I just want to make sure .


Also , I found a dead drive with the 70265 board in my pas collecion . I assume that it won't be a donor for acessibing it. Howver, can I substitute this board just find out if my drive will spin ?
