Buffalo Network Hard Drive Fault

Hi all,

I'm having loads of problems with my Buffalo Linkstation Live LS-CHL2.0TL. This is a 2TB network hard drive which worked perfectly well until a month ago when the firmware required upgrading. I upgraded the firmware but can't for the life of me remember the admin password required to complete the upgrade. I've tried all passwords I've ever used and it doesn't appear to be any of them. So I tried resetting the device to factory settings and apparently I checked the box at initial set-up so the password won't reset. I played around with some java stuff that I found on the internet to try to remove the password but none of it worked.

I've removed the hard drive from the enclosure and removed the circuit board that was connected to it assuming that it was the circuit board which contained the admin details not the hard drive. After connecting the drive to my desktop it appears as 6 separate local disks and all are in the RAW format and can't be accessed without formatting.

I'd like to recover the data from the drive, approximately 800Gb of data. Does anybody know of a way to remove the data from the drive or remove the admin password from the device so I can once again access it as normal?

Windows will not recognize since the Hard drive uses either an XFS file system or EXT3/4.

You can try a program called r-studio or UFS explorer to see if you can get your data off. both of those will recognize either of the file systems. But you will need to buy the program to actually copy the data off.

Do you know if the trial version of UFS explorer will let me copy my files individually to my desktop?

EDIT: only if the files are smaller than 64Kb
It's saying my hard drive is a XFS file system, is there a free program specifically for recovery from that type?

After I've saved my files I just need to completely restore the NAS to factory settings, will formatting the hard drive(s) do this or is it more difficult?

The software cleanroom gave is a fraction the cost of what a recovery would have been. Just buy it

You could try FTKImager?

You might be able to mount the drive in Linux and copy the files to another drive/location. Try booting with the current Hirens boot cd and select Linux from the menu or boot with Ubuntu cd.

you should be able to format the driver from the NAS. Just go to the IP address and login as admin and reset device to default and reformat.

As for a free way. Some of the other members suggested some other ways. UFS explorer is a great program to have handy if you are using NAS devices. Definitely worth the cost.

i had many cases here which i recovered the data from the NAS and used the NAS again with new HDD inside

btw, for Buffalo, it has something like SAFE MODE which requires SSH access and has a default IP address for safe mode access to repair it and upload new FW to the drive to use it again.

Ufs explorer is less than 40 Euros, his data must be pretty worthless if he's not prepared to pay that!!!!
