1TB WD Green CRASH

Hi guys and gals

was copying some files from my external 1TB WD Caviar Green WD10EARS, it slipped out my fingertips from about 1.5 inches.
now the drive spins up click like 4 times and spin down. Not detecting in BIOS or anything.
data is not that important but if it can be fixed id like to give it a shot.
Any ideas on how is should tackle this. im thinking its a head problem but hey i could be wrong im no expert.
any feedback would be appreciated.

99% certainly going to be a heads problem, but it's not DIYable I'm afraid.

These wd drives are difficult to exchange heads on for a lot of pros, let alone amateurs, due to alignment issues etc..

thanks for the heads up.... is there any input on where one could find techniques on realigning the heads once the alignment is out any tips? PM me if you can help or point in the correct direction, if its a trade secret which you pros hold close to your chest i will understand. But i have to say difficult does not mean impossible no disrespect.

Sorry, no.

By disclosing what I have learnt over a long period of time, at great expense (lots of parts and trial and error) I would be shooting myself in the foot!

Like you say, it's difficult but not impossible

thanks.. dont share it , i wouldnt want you to walk with a limp... im sure i will figure it out before too long.... will update the forum when i do.. there are too many countries, too many people tooooo many hard drives for any of us to be in the same market place if i were doin this for money... but i guess thats where i will get to before too long...

on a real note, i would not trust a drive i change heads on, grab the data & off to the aluminum Recycling Pile. WD alignments are Problematic with out enough experience & time. so check for warranty & have WD give you another one if you don't need the data.

ok guys just to report as promised, i successfully did 2 heads transplants with western digital drives first one was 2 40GB drives 1 platter 1 rw head... went verry simple from what i saw only issue i had was i notice ddi had idx flashing but it still cloned with no issue...

second test 2 wd 60GB drives 4 heads 2 platters no issues with the HSA transplant there either, what i did before hand however was i scribed the screws so i know the exact location it was in before i removed it.... did that on all four drives and when i did the head transplant i had no issues imaging... i did have to get the screws pretty much exactly in the position of the scribe lines.

so maybe i just got lucky because everything went as smooth as a babies ass.... or maybe the drives i used dont suffer that much from head alignment issues...

Thats right. 1tb is a different generation with distinct difficulties.

but good practice, & the encouragement Factor, will remove the Transplant Jitters.

indeed DrFaustus.... if i can find a donor i will try the transplant at worst im in the same position im in now lol...
