Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hi all,
WD5000BEVT-22A0RT0. Drive inits and comes ready, if not slightly delayed. SA modules and ROM have all been read 100% successfully at normal speed. Service tracks started to read fine up until cyl -135 and then I get read errors.
In DE I can view all partitions and folder structures, however this takes a while (20 seconds) to expand a folder, drive goes BSY whilst trying to populate directory structure. Expanding a folder takes a while, any browsing of directory structure causes drive to go BSY and then it comes right again. Saving any files takes a very long time, a minute per .doc for example. Some will read with errors, some won't read at all, some will read fine. Started saving 1.3GB PST file, saved a few percent of the file quickly and then gets stuck, occasional flashes of ERR and UNC and BSY.
Imaged the drive in reverse and DE imaged the 2nd half of the drive perfectly, full speed not one read error. As it got closer to the middle of the drive I get read errors here and there. Imaging from the start of the drive I get lots of read errors from about 10 000 000 LBA. Basically the first half of the drive does not image well at all. I've tweaked head maps, fiddled with imaging settings.
In your opinions would this be weak/failing heads or bad media? The fact that I can see directory structure, read all SA modules, and image 2nd half of drive perfectly makes me thing the heads are ok. Bad media on the first half of the drive?
DE log looks something like this when saving:
File saving S:\ZATB0002\Documents\Botswana WUC\ADB-BD-IF-97-111-EN-SCANNEDIMAGE.069.pdf complete
File S:\ZATB0002\Documents\Botswana WUC\analysis of us water infrastructure from a security perspective.pdf has been saved, but it contains unread or bad sectors
If it's worth trying a replacement HSA I will, but if I'm wasting my time please point it out.
Thanks.

I think it is bad sectors.

I'm wondering if these heads aren't maybe a bit weak and whether some 'fresh' heads will do a better job of reading this media.

I managed to get the documents and the photos off this drive in the end. Some of the photos are slightly corrupt, not many. The PST seemed to have lots of read errors but after repairing the imaged PST it seems to work fine. I didn't think the PST would make it, thankfully it pulled through. DE is a great bit of kit when you know how to use it.
