Replacing IC on WD board

I am looking someone who could replace the Main controller (BIOS built-in) in a WD board as below

I have already the donor board just need someone (preferably in the UK, Europa or China) with skills and experience to do the swap.

I 've already got another working PCB (the HD spins with the new one) but the HD is not be recognised by the MotherBoard BIOS, hence I need the HD BIOS from the old fried board in the new PCB, but these WD boards have their BIOS in the main IC.

I can clearly see a capacitor (just above the IC in the picture) which was burnt in power surge. Do you think if I change this capacitor would be enough to get the old board working (much easier than change the IC)?

Show a good picture of your own board as it might have u12 populated in which case it could be a far easier job.
Also the damage might be repairable.

The solder point is bloated in component Y1 (which I was told is a capacitor), there is matching burnt mark in the protective foam. I looked with a magnifying glass and all other components in the board do not show any sign of damage.

@dick: tried to take a few pics and all come blurred, but this board does not have a u12.

@einstein9: - I assume this to be the problem as explained above (sign on board and foam and no other apparent damage), I know that when a put the new board the drive spins but it is not recognised by the BIOS.


There is no important data in the HD which I have not already recovered from backups. There are a few files from websites that no longer exist and some saved passwords in my Mozilla profile. It is a 90% full 600GB hd but what would really interest me would be less than 10GB.

When the power surge blew 2 HD, the power supply and the motherboard I panicked and got the donor board from HK, I had someone who did some precision electronic jobs in the past but he moved away and I can no longer contact him.

Replacing Y1 wouldn't be a big job, but I could then waste the new board if unsuccessful. I am finding that getting this data is becoming more expensive than it is really worth and I don't want to throw good money after bad.

pcimage quoted their minimum fee +VAT and I have to send the HD (+more P&P) I will see what is left from my pay check at the end of the month before considering it

Y1 is a crystal.

it's hard and complicated to change the MCU in these models . change the full pcb much easier

Did you change the Y1(cristal)?

I have one problem with my logic board too....Diodes and resistors are good....Then I think to change the cristal Y1.
My drive do not spin, Anybody think that the cristal can be a problem?

In my experience, most all drives with ROM code embedded in main IC have a backup copy stored in the service area. A professional data recovery lab should be able to program a new PCB with no problems. Much easier than trying to move the Main IC. They might even be able to just read the ROM code through boot rom code. It often works even on bad PCB's.

@fsnsengel, if you upload a detailed photo of your PCB, I will identify the voltage test points for you. The crystal is not the first place to look.

BTW, if your drive appears in BIOS, even with a blank model number, it could be that it is configured to Power Up In Standby (PUIS).

Hello, my board is attached. Today...the hard drive do not spin with my logic board. I bought one with the same serial and change but from one WD1600 with different bios. With the new logic board the drive spin, but is not recognized by the PC..this is because the firmware of the bios.

I would like to update the firmware of the bios, but I do not find a free software to do this.

I tested diodes D3 and D4 and resistors comparing my original board with new one, and the values are the same...nothing to different, because this I am suspecting about the Y1.
If the Y1 can be a problem I would like to test changing Y1 first, because is easier that CMD chip...rsrs

@fsnsengel, please upload a photo of your PCB. The one you supplied has no detail. In any case, the original photo is of a 701537 whereas yours is of a 701444.

Here is my board.

I already clean a little the board. Somebody knows one software to change firmware of bios free? I saw that there is DFL-Wdi mas is not free.

How I sad before, the diodes and resistors looks good. I suspect the problem is in the Y1. If Y1(cristal) is the problem the drive can not start the bios when I power on the computer? Today, when I start the hard drive, nothing happens(not spin/not bios detected).

When I put the logic board that I bought but with different bios, the drive spin and stop after some seconds.

There is a lot of corrosion and heat burns on that PCB. I wouldn't be at all surprised if there are several burned out components. The easiest route will still be to just get the drive to someone with a PC-3000 who can simply rebuild the ROM code from the service area and program a new PCB. Probably will cost around $300-$500 depending on where you take it.

If I find one logic board with exactly the same code 2060-701444-004 REV but from one different HD WD3200AAJS-00VWA0. Do you think will work?My hard drive is WD3200aajs-65vwa0.

Which information need to be exactly the same?
