WD 500 GB hard drive broken usb

September 7th, 2011, 15:36

Hello everyone-
I have a 500 gb WD external hard drive. I dropped it and the mini usb connection broke. So,the local electronics store said just get a new sata enclosure. So, I did and of course it came up as an unnallocated drive in Disk Management. Computer shop then told me they could not get any data off and recommended Data Recovery Service. They told me that the pcb would not decrypt data. What would be correct way around this. Tried swapping pcb from same model drive( different pcb model #) Didn't work of course. Pcb is 4061-705059-001 rev AE.

Forgot to mention that resoldering usb connection is not an option. That the control board has no soldering points on it.Don't know.....

it has to be the same enclosure. so match the WD model number on the bottom of the enclosure and buy another 500gb WD drive with that model number. It is not always 100% to work, so you may have to go through a bunch of them to get the right one.

Since you dropped it, the drive may have other issues besides just a broken usb connector from the controller. Swapping the pCB will do nothing so you can stop with that.
