first 6% of this was toast, DDI was getting most of it but died in reverse at 2% (rest is ok) up untill now, pretty good recovery.

Heads "were" fine

Would this suggest the heads have packed in? Spins up tries its best but then spins down.

Most likely the heads are dead now. However id still try a donor PCB with patient ROM on it. U never know... =)
