Firmware or hardware fault - ST3500410AS

September 19th, 2011, 2:52

Hello all.

I have a Seagate ST3500410AS.

On power on, the drive spins up, makes a dozen or so ticking noises like the heads are moving, and then the drive powers down about 15 seconds after the initial power up.

Would this most likely be a firmware fault for this model?
Thank you for any help you can provide.
Josh

Agree with einstein9, 9/10 gonna be bad heads with those symptoms on that model.

Thanks for your advice einstein9 and pcimage.
I appreciate it.

I just noticed now that the drive eventually spins up again, and then starts making a fairly quiet but fairly nasty scraping sound.... :(

So I'd say your advice is spot on.

Thank you both.
