WDC Marvel and RAM head map

October 9th, 2011, 4:02

Have got WD5000KS Zeus (8 heads) that does NOT ID and does click endless.

Solved succesfully the clicking issue by disable in rom head #4.
Than i found BAD SA AREA on firsts tracks of heads 0, so i repaired sucessfully also that problem.

Now the drive IDs and READY, BUT to archieve this i had still to disable head#4 in rom (without disabling that head the HDD even repaired was clicking endless.)

But now i have the problem that even creating an head MAP, after firsts sectors of copyng, the translator hangs the drive.

I would like to work in RAM, but with 7 heads in ROM, i am not allowed in the utility to work with 8 heads after the hdd is in ready state.

Any help would be much appreciated.

The hdd have got 8 heads,IF you disable in Rom one head, after that in RAM you are not allowed to edit more than 7 heads.

Hi...this is wrong...You have to start the hdd with all 8 heads enabled, after that do HM in RAM, cut H4, Soft Reset and after that the hdd should ID correctly, no clicking, and give access in LBA...Now you can use DE and make image with the remaining 7 heads....Of course it will be incomplete , but at least you will have something...

If i start the hdd with all 8 heads enabled, it does not reach READY as i wrote above, becouse of the head # 4 does not find servo or is demaged, so the drive endless cliccking.

Like the man said, with all 8 heads enabled the drive clicks endlessly. If it clicked, spun down and came DRDY (which is the case 9/10 times) then he could of course edit the head map in RAM to temporarily disable the duff head and then image the other 7.

This is why I told him to hot swap!

Sorry....My mistake...I did't read carefully the first post....Anyway there is a solution for this without hotswap....But of course the best solution is to try hotswap first and then , if nothing helps, other solutions.

@pcimage
"wrong" was refered to the way he is trying to do the HM in RAM...You cannot cut a head in ROM and after that expect to find that head in RAM to cut it.

Cutting head in ROM will adjust the size of the zones in SA which will then allow reading only a few hundred LBA from first head, or until it reaches incorrect start/end of zone. Also, in Zeus series even if you make head map there can be problems in image where HDD begins knocking and you need repeat several times.

If it does not come ready then even with Short Circuit you cannot reach head map in RAM.

PCimage already gave you the best advice possible in this case.
