WD Passport attempting to spin but giving up

October 20th, 2011, 16:03

I have a My Passport Essential SE 1 TB External hard drive (P/N wdbacx0010bbk). While I was using it the drive jerked and after that it didn't work. Whenever I plugin I hear the drive trying to spin up and shutting down. It makes 5 tries before giving up. Following is the link to the file with the recording of the noise.

WD Passport noise

I am interested in knowing what my options are.

Thanks

Either the motor is jammed, or the heads are stuck to the platters (stiction). Please define what you mean by 'jerked'? Did it fall?

Or worse still, one or more heads have snapped off and caused the head arms to get tangled up in the ramp because they can't get back on the ramp properly.

Seen many cases like this, especially when people have attempted "percussive maintenance" to DIY stiction, and made matters 100x worse. :-(

And with each attempt to power is potentially scratching the surface...
