How do I use "ZU?"

October 20th, 2011, 21:16

I downloaded the .exe have seen it referenced in forums, but details on how to use it. Is it used in conjuction with MHDD?( which I have made and iso of and loaded scripts to USB.) - I am trying to remove or reveal hard drive user password. I have followed the instructions on the forum for use with MHDD and get the error after test 8. Help please.

This sata drive you need to conect this drive to IDE using a Sata2IDE convertor then ZU will work on your drive .

If the pc has the option in the bios another way would be to select 'compatibility mode' or 'ide mode'.

You would need to prepare a system disk to boot from if your setup is not ready to boot in this mode.

Ok, so when I try to run it with an adapter, i get the message that it's not compatable on the machin I'm running it from. So I set bios to IDE on original machine, ran a boot disk and then ran zu. It asked me to choose "ZU /P or /S. "p" says drive not ready. "S" gives a 7f7f7f7f7f7f7 etc. error. :x

p.s. I also found unlockhdd.exe, ran it from a boot disk, pulled a password, but it still tells me the password is invalid. I'm at a loss.

Are you answering the password challenge the same way as it was set? That is, if the password was set via BIOS on a particular machine, are you entering the password in response to a BIOS challenge on the same machine?

BTW, have you tried the MHDD scripts in this thread?

There are loads of variables as to where it is going wrong.
I nearly always suspect the adapters because any bad connections here cause these errors.

Also what OS are you using to mount drives and run ZU?

And as in my previous post......

One more thing you need pure DOS mode to run ZU .

Yes. Am answering on same machine. I'm wondering if someone slapped the hd in this laptop from another machine.
I have run mhdd scripts and after line 8 I get "drive reports error" Which I've seen other people report, but did not see a answer to.

The OS being used to mount drives with adapter was 7 64 bit. Gave up on the adapter route. - Got a KVM hooked up to original machine. 'BOut ready to see if I can unlock it with a hammer.

The reason I ask is that BIOS records the password using keyboard scan codes whereas a software application would use ASCII codes.

For example, here are the make and break scan codes for a Microsoft Wireless Desktop Elite keyboard, model 1011 (US layout):
