Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hi, new member here.
I'm working with a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9.
This HD won't spin up. Also, isn't recognized by the IDE PCIe adapter.
My questions are:
1. Does the HD have to spin up in order for it to be recognized. In other words, is the information provided by the PCB?
2. if the consensus is, the PCB may be bad, does it have to show some sign of a burn mark? Perhaps a bad chip?
3. Is a replacement PCB the most logical first step.
Thanks,
Randy

1) Yes, HD has to spin up in order to be recognized.
2) Damage could be visible or might not be visible.
3) Yes, PCB would first logical step.

Hi, welcome.
1. Yes.
2. Not necesserily.
3. Yes, but sometimes you need to transfer ROM from the patient board to the donor. In DM9, it is not always necessary, though.

if spin up and doesn't click , check with MHDD , if stay busy forever or id differently than MAXTOR 6P120... your drive is failing and it's game over for DIY. Same if SCAN hangs or you get only X or ! in case it is identified.
PCB is not the problem.

Installed the replacement PCB. It worked. Retrieved all my data.
