Toshiba MK6025GAS Not Spinning up.

January 1st, 2012, 16:33

I've been trying to recover data from Toshiba MK6025GAS which had windows xp on it and failed. I did manage to find the files structure on the disk, but i think the disk had a mechanical fault as it was freezing when seaching for files. on transferring the HDD to another PC the hdd fail to spin up no sign of life..

I did connect the ide adaptor 180 deg out, would this have damaged the PCB? And if i gently shake the HDD, i can here a slight rattle inside the case?

Can anyone recommend a way forward, would a Donner hdd help?
Any help would be greatly recieved!

The initial problem sounds like bad sectors, but now it's dead?

If that is the case, then a new PCB will not help you. All Toshiba PCB's are absolutely unique to each drive.

These drives do have a certain amount of rattle when shaken.

If the data is important then it needs proper diagnosis, which we can offer in UK.

A recovery at this stage shouldn't be mega-bucks, if the drive isn't tampered with further.

If you upload a detailed photo or scan of the component side of the PCB, perhaps someone could help. I suspect, however, that you may have damaged the MCU. Depending on what we find, you may get out of trouble for US$50, at least as far as the PCB is concerned. You will still have the original internal fault, though, in which case you could try your luck with software such as ddrescue.

Ok here is a couple of pictures of the PCB. it looks to be in ok condition.

You will need to move the 8-pin serial EEPROM at location IC12 to your donor PCB.

However, I would first measure the resistances of fuse F1 and diode D1 near the bottom end of the IDE connector. I don't hold out much hope for you, though, as I expect that the Marvell MCU (88i5510-BCJ1) will be damaged.

Can I check this a volt meter?

I think i would be capable of moving the EEPROM, where would get a donor PCB. I have found a used hard drive for sale with the same Part Number MK6025GAS, would this be suitable ?

Use a multimeter to measure the resistances. Set it on the lowest range, eg 200 ohms.

See http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/TVS_diode_FAQ.html

As for your question regarding a donor drive, I see no reason why a MK6025GAS donor would not work with a MK6025GAS patient, but then I'm not a DR professional. I assume you are asking this question because you want to be sure that the same PCB was used for all serial numbers.
