Sea Gate External HDD Not Displayed in Mycomputer...

January 4th, 2012, 9:00

Hey Everyone, Nice to meet u all... I got a Seagate 500GB External Hardisk which i bought around 6 months ago.. I always used to keep my harddisk connected to my pc and then one day it stopped working without any warning.. i tried installing the driver again and reconnected it but still it wouldnt work... and then when i went to device manager the harddisk is displayed there but it wont get displayed in mycomputer... then i tried assigning a drive letter so i went to disk management but it didnt show up there.. so i uninstalled the driver and then tried reconnecting and then the disk management kept on loading and after sometime it showed up and in the bottom where the hdd is displayed its written "Disk 1 with a red down arrow, below tat unknown, below it 2048.00GB, below it Not Initialized..... and after some time it showed Initialize Disk window and it said tat i need to initialize it before logical disk can access it... Wat to do?? i got so many important data in it... is there a way to recover it??

Right now i tried everything i said here.. and when i tried the driver installation it said failed.. and in disk management it shows exactly like i said.. and in device manager it written "Disk Drive" and when click on details its blank...i have attached the disk management view and driver failed view... hope u guys can help me.. Thanks.. ^_^

Hi,

If your data on the drive is important, first thing I would go to a data recovery company to get a diagnosis, so you could understand what's the problem of your drive.

A DYI for now would be to power up the drive and listen very carefully what sounds does it produce and let us know.

When the drive shows up like this in device manager did you create a partition?
I think it may have a Firmware problem our some information in the MBR was lost.
I recomend you to don't create a partition and take the drive to a Data recover pro near your house.

i listened to the sound and at first it was like something is rotating and then a click Sound like we hear in some kind of clocks... for some time and then there is no sound....

As it's a 500Gb drive showing a 2Tb partition I suspect firmware / PCB... but proper diagnosis is crucial... Not a DIY case I'm afraid.

How do i find it????

The model number is on the drive's label. You need to remove the drive from the enclosure to see it. That will void your warranty, though.

You may be able to see a little more information using HD Sentinel or HDDScan, but I doubt it.

In any case, you don't appear to have any easy DIY options. :-(

Well hmm... then my only option is to take it to the data recovery company???

Do you hear 11 clicks?

Re: Sea Gate External HDD Not Displayed in Mycomputer...

Judging from that model number, I would say that's a 500gb 5400.6 drive.

You will need to remove it from its chassis and connect it via its SATA connection (remove the USB bridge board) and see what a regular PC detects it as in the BIOS.

I.e. does the PC detect the proper model from the drive label (e.g. ST9500425AS) and the correct capacity.

Once you have done this, then report back with results. Without this info then we cannot help you.

Yes, connect like a regular drive.

If the warranty is more important than your data, then we might as well end this thread here. You cannot make an omelette without breaking eggs!!

BIOS should show model and capacity in the setup.
