Samsung HM641JX

January 10th, 2012, 2:41

Hello all,

A quick one: Samsung HM641JX from a G2, has USB-only PCB. As far as head compatibilty goes I am guessing a HM641JI will work as the only difference I'm seeing is the X has USB PCB whilst the I is SATA.

Thanks.

The drive innards can be physically identical but firmware conflict prevents use of a swapped PCB.

drive 1: HM641JX/VPK rev.A f/w: 2AJ10001--from "S2 Portable 640GB" package (HX-MU064DA/G4 2010.3)
drive 2: HM641JI/M rev.A f/w: 2AJ10003--from an HP laptop, 2010.11 label date

Attempting to recover a partition on drive 1, substituted the Serial ATA PCB taken off drive 2.
result: spins up 3x (w/ chirping), stops, not recognized.

Yes, because the ROM info was not transferred.
