Seagate Barracuda LP ST31000520AS (1Tb)

Hi everyone,

I have that Seagate disk that does not spin anymore. I removed the PCB and saw that the two resistors at the very right side, near the power supply connector, are burnt. Details of the drive are as follow:

S/N: 9VX0670F
P/N: 9TN154-510
Firmware: CC32
Date Code: 10065
Site Code: TK

In the other hand, I have another (but working) drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST31000528AS

S/N: 9VPAVPD8
P/N: 9SL154-303
Firmware: CC46
Date Code: 11237
Site Code: TK

As PCB's looked identical, I swapped them but I was not optimistic. Of course, I was right not to be... The drive started to spin, clicked for a few seconds and then spinned down (exactly like tgrans21's explanation).

What are the possible solutions ? Would it be possible to "bypass" those two burnt resistors ?

By luck, I have found another Seagate Barracuda LP ST31000520AS:

S/N: 5VX09TXY
P/N: 9TN154-510
Firmware: CC32
Date Code: 10064
Site Code: WU

I swapped the PCB's. The disk starts, clicks for a while (in another way), then continues spinning. But it's not detected by the BIOS.

Could I expect something with the "LBA 0" trick ? I thought it could make the drive detectable again in order to duplicate it with ddrescue.

You have to transfer ROM chip from original PCB to new one in order to make your drive work.
That chip contains unique microcode to your drive.

Harddrivespecialst is correct, all PCBs on this series are absolutely unique.

Right. The problem is that I do not want to destroy any of those two working disks. Is the soldering iron the only solution ? Is there no way to flash the drive as suggested there ? (I guess you will tell me that ROM is not EEPROM...)

Is the ROM the 8-pin chip on the top or on the left ? (On the top-right, you can see the burn area.)
