Hi,

I don't know very much about SCSI drive but maybe some of you will...
So do you know what that error would mean (see attached file) ?

Does it spin?
Looks like it doesn't

Re: SCSI HDD

You're right, it doesn't spin...
But the motor is not stuck and the result is the same with a donor PCB.

it's not that easy to Chang pcb in scsi beside firmware issue

error says - use spin up command to spin up the drive
Try auto spin up jumper

Thank's Doomer...
I'll try tomorow and keep you posted !

Agreed - unfortunately I have also seen exactly the same ASC & ASCQ values from disks which have deliberately spun-down (or did not spin-up) due to an internal fault, and on those drives, sending a Start Unit from the host causes the drive to return the same values again. :(

Some of the Adaptec SCSI card BIOS can be configured to send (or not) a Start Unit command (on a per-target basis), so the OP can try that BIOS setting for the correct target ID, in order to try your suggestion. :)

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Key_Code_Qualifier

Key / ASC / ASCQ --- Error Condition

2 / 04 / 02 --- Not Ready - need initialise command (start unit)

Re: SCSI HDD

With the jumper, now the HDD is spinning but I still have "Unexpected SCSI Command Failed" and now the "Sens Code Qualifier" is 0x00. So according to fzabkar (thank's for the wikipedia page), the HDD is now "Not Ready - Cause not reportable." with the original and donor PCB...

I think i'll try to change the head's in the afternoon.
Do you think that's a good idea or that's useless because it's firmeware issue ?

And the model is?
Hitachi?

Re: SCSI HDD

February 7th, 2012, 10:28

Sorry Doomer, I sould have start with that :
It's a seagate rebranded as IBM...
MDL : ST336607LW
36.4 GB USCSI 10KRPM

Re: SCSI HDD

February 7th, 2012, 12:05

Hmm
Start with PCB then

Re: SCSI HDD

February 7th, 2012, 12:17

so the bad new is that we can't change the heads...
Maybe i'll post a picture tomorow...

I think i'm gonna give up !

Re: SCSI HDD

February 7th, 2012, 12:20

I don't think it's heads

Re: SCSI HDD

February 8th, 2012, 4:24

Start with PCB then
It's not PCB since the original one works with donor drive
I don't think it's heads
Anyway, I can't change them

good for you
I hope you don't charge client for your service

Re: SCSI HDD

These can be changed, but the process is difficult and procedure totally different to any head change you may have done already.

If the job is bigger than you then simply return the media to your client who can send to to someone who can do it, though it will not be cheap considering the work required and the fact that work has already been attempted on it.
