A hard disc capacity question

February 7th, 2012, 13:20

Hello,

I have a LG NAS model N2A2DF2 4TB. It uses 2 Hitachi HDS72292 drives, each spec at 2TB capacity. Yet when I look at the unformatted capacity using the NAS interface, the capacity is shown as 1.8 TB for each or 3.6 TB combined for both drives.

Shouldn't the capacity is 2TB unformatted for each drive?

Many thanks.

This is because there are actually two different systems used in relation to storage media, binary and decimal. Binary identifies 1 KB as 1024 bytes, while decimal identifies 1 KB as 1000 bytes.

The storage 'standard' will always use decimal

@webbeing:

FYI you can read some of the background of what hddguy explained here:

This is quite an FAQ in the storage area, so there are other places you will find info, if you want to read more...
