Is there any hope for the data?

February 9th, 2012, 21:51

So the story begins like this,
I had one WD MyBook 500GB (the model doesn't really matter anymore) ,connected with USB, which started to having several problems after 2.5 years of use. Some times it was not recognized by the computer, failing at coping files to it and from it and turning off and on again without any reason. So after trying changing usb port, usb wire and a/c adapter i decided that it must be something wrong with the pcb of the box so I opened it and made the hdd internal and everything worked perfect for about 3 months(the hdd inside is WD5000AAKS). The only problem i had is that some of the videos i had in when trying to play them they ware freezing for 3-4 second. For example an 25min video was freezing 1-2 times for about 3-4 for seconds and nothing else.
At this point I must make clear that the hdd was for about 3-4 months at the beginning and then it stayed unused for about 1.5year. After making it internal the problem of freezing on the videos was only seen on videos that were there at the first period of use(to make it clear it was the hole series of Friends). Since i started to use it again after 1.5 year, I started putting in a lot of things such as movies, series, photos and other files. For the 3-4 months as i said there was not a single problem with the "new" files.
One day, as all the hdds, it decided to start making problems. At the begging I was trying to copy files to it and almost every time it was not able to do it with he fist try. For small-medium files (top 600-700MB) if it wasnt done by the fist try most of the time will be ok. But for larger files it could take 3-4 times. Then it the problem with the freezing increased and spread to the entire drive. The freeze was about 10 seconds at best and some times permanat, not only at the "old files" and not only at videos. Everything was very hard to open, very slow when open and frequently crashing the program used (vlc, wmp, windows photo viewer..etc).
I tried to hhd smart, it said no problem. Then i tried another programm that i trust cause it helped once, hdd regenarator.
It started to scan and it took 5days to complete 75% and found at this point something around 100K+ delays. No bad sectors but over 100K delays. I couldn't complete to 100% cause i had power loss at home and it stopped at 75%. Of course i saw no point of trying to start it again.
After that i borrowed an empty hdd and tryied to clone it with Acronis. I tried 2 times but due to other issues I was forced to stop it cause it was taking ages to complete, with purpose to leave alone to do the job when I will be able to do my other work elsewhere. So when i left the acronis do the clone after 20 days (when the pc was working without a break) it the progress was around 65% and I decided that I cant do anything. So i stopped the acronis and tried to reboot the computer after 20days. But the hdd didn't agree. After the restart it couldnt boot, so i unplugged it and the computer booted normally with the main drive on only.
I know you would say that it was my fault not take back-up from the first sign. I know, it wasn't that i don't know to recognize the sign of a failing hdd, but i didnt want to buy an hdd with these prices at the market (i think it as robbery), none of my friends had an empty hdd what could help me take backup so I was delaying.
SO is there any idea what is going wrong ? I know probably the drive is off but is there any way that i can get my data back? Is there any chance it the pcb that failed, so with a change i will have the change to take backup? Is there anyway to get this hdd work properly for some enogh time to get my data back? What do you suggest.
Sorry for the long post but I am trying to make it clear and sorry for my english (its not my native language so i did my best :P ). Thank you for reading all this long post.

Sure, there are chanches to recover data. Notice that I said data, not the data. One cannot guarantee all data can be recovered, especially remotely on the forum.

Although can't be 100% excluded, more than likely not A PCB issue.

Only a professional imaging tool and the supervision of a good tech will complete the job successfully, which is not readily available and inexpensive.

Best wishes

We can do this, if you want we can evaluate for free the drive and quote you a price for recovery.
As I understand it, you have commited most of the DIY sins, letting a failing drive to clone for 20days, running hdd regenerator etc.
Nevertheless, we can evaluate it for free and see what it can be recovered.
