Samsung HD080HJ/P hard drive not recognized by BIOS

February 22nd, 2012, 17:31

Ok so just a quick disclaimer because I know the majority of you on here are pretty ruthless with people who are attempting to do data recovery and not know what they're doing. I know the risks involved, how bad you can screw up the drive, how I am taking precious hard earned money from your dinner table.

Please don't perceive me as a dick as I am not. I am just preparing myself for the comments and reactions that I will receive from the majority of the posters on this forum, thatdellguy, BlackST, and Ann in particular.

I have a Samsung HD080HJ/P hard drive, not recognized in BIOS. It is not recognized by MHDD either. Upon plugging the drive into power, the drive will spin up, I cannot hear anything with the heads being activated or moving. After roughly 30 seconds or so the hard drive spins itself down. There is no visible damage on the PCB.

I bought another PCB for a board swap, received it, installed it, the drive starts, I can hear the heads click a few times, not in rapid succession but rather a few seconds apart and then the drive just stays spinning but is not recognized by BIOS.

I don't have any access to a DeepSpar Imager or PC3000 or any other various data recovery hardware.

The owner of this drive is not willing to pay for advanced data recovery and understands the risks of continuing to run this drive while attempting to see if any data can be recovered. So please spare the yelling and condescending posts.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? With the symptoms I listed does it sound like it's a mechanical problem that deals with the heads/spindle or possibly firmware related? Is there any possible way a board swap with perhaps a closer match would work?

I am now ready for my whipping.

I think you've got it all wrong. People will not whip you for attempting a pcb swap (even if you don't know if that is even necessary).
People will not whip you at all, actually. People will point you to the right direction when they feel it is worth the trouble (ie. when you're kind, you are keen to follow instructions etc). People will not help you when you're offending, know-it-alls and condescending.
People will be judgemental when you have crossed the lines of DIY, and after completely screwing the drive, THEN seek for advice, esp. if you're not the owner of the drive. Then, after you receive advice, you keep being offending. Or, when people tell you that there is nothing more you can do without proper knowledge and equipment, you insist on questioning that.

Having said all of the above, I personally don't think you have done something wrong or over the line here, you just swapped the pcb and that came to no good result (which is normal).

I'm afraid I can not help you further, the symptoms you describe don't help me at all. The fact that the drive clicks with new pcb is normal. The fact that it doesn't click with old pcb indicates that there is some f/w related problem, maybe. Also your drive uses a marvel chip that mimics heads or media errors, but that is not the issue in this case at all.
Maybe someone more experienced in this particular model can help you more.

Good luck.

Initial symptoms indicate a firmware issue I would say. This firmware cannot be "reflashed" like a mobile phone or DVDRW drive, it needs to be REPAIRED.

With the clicking after fitting a new (wrong ROM version) PCB, as northwind says, is to be expected.

Unfortunately you WILL need pro assistance for this, to access the fw and know what to do once you have this access.

If the firmware issue is what I think it is then it shouldn't be too expensive, we would normally charge no more than £250 for example. Assuming it is what I think it is :-)

Oh. 8)

This is when DR turns into SM ?

Anyway and jokes apart, the "right direction" to point to is the nearest professional. The problem should be (at this stage) relatively simple but the more you fiddle with the drive the more you put data at risk. Plain and simple.

out of interest, how much is your client willing to pay you?
