WD1600 PCB and Donor Query

Hi all,

looking to carry out a repair to a WD 1600 Caviar SE

PCB has a melted smooth chip and burnt other components. I only have one similar model. I hope that someone could advise if my working PCB would allow me to make a working drive out of the two, (assuming the 8 pin rom on faulty pcb is ok)

"Donor" drive's PCB is working but has suspected bad heads due to being dropped while on.
"Faulty" drive was not dropped or knocked but smooth chip melted. (8pin rom appears unaffected)

Am I correct that no further information is required for WD's re the PCB sticker info for correct matching?

If the SMOOTH is burn't and there is bad damage to PCB then there's a chance that preamp is damaged as well.

If U12 is populated then all you need do is move across U12 and match the PCB number, the one etched onto the board itself. I never work with the stickers.

If preamp is OK then you should be in luck.

was the info etched into the board so decided to go ahead and see what happened.

Moved U12, powered up the drive and hey presto drive is now fully functional. Will run some tests to ensure its good to save data.

Thanks for the tip re using the etched info rather than the stickers.
