Segate Barracuda Firmware Fix

March 3rd, 2012, 5:57

Hello guys, some help here.. yes, the first type of recoveries all of us start with. The Barracuda!

Got a ST3100033A S 1000GB 3.5" not detecting at POST.

Tried to reset using the BSY method but I got stuck at U (Spin-up)

http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/128807- ... 0011-hdds/

Rst 0x20M
ASCII Diag mode

F3 T>/2

F3 2>Z

Spin Down Complete
Elapsed Time 0.129 msecs
F3 2>U

DiagError 00006008
Spin Error
Elapsed Time 6 mins 42 secs
R/W Status 2 R/W Error 84150180
F3 2>

At this point, should I go ahead with Level 1, Smart Erase, etc?

NO! Drives heads appear not to be reading properly.

Drive has more issues than just a "BSY bug", one size does not fit all!

Start with diagnosing it properly....

What does it do, EXACTLY? Normal noises? Click? Stay spinning? Spin down?

When I put my ears to the hard drive, I hear a beep every few seconds, no spinups at all.

Should not be applying busy fix to a stalled motor.....
I would stay away from those drives, if they are customer drives, before you make it worth....

Nope, they are my own test drives. Sounds like I can't do much on my end?

Heads are stucked to platters and/or seized motor. You will need a pro help in this case if you need the data.

The solution is very simple if you know how:

This is a Seagate not a Samsung. Most importantly, this is a 3.5" drive, not a 2.5". You should be aware that these drives have a problem called spindle lock (or seized motor). This has nothing to do with the link you provided and it is definitely not very simple as you present it.

IF the problem of the OP's drive is seized motor (which is 99% on these drives, extremely rare to be stiction), then it is one of the hardest DR operations and can be very costly. Someone with minimal experience can mess this very, very, very badly.

Absolutely agree 100% with Northwind, this is NOT a DIY case :-(
