WD My Book 1130 USB Disk, BitLocker Problem occur, Unusable!

March 24th, 2012, 14:10

Dear HDD masters,

Hi,
I have problem in my HDD, as the WD-MyBook-1130-USB-Disk [2TB] will unusable after 'Bitlocker' encryption in Win7-x64-Ultimate. The whole story is:
After I have Encrypted some of my USB drives, ~3 of them, then I decide to Encrypt the first Primary/Active Drive too. The Encryption is gone up to 46% then stopped and the HDD go to hibernate, then I decide to Decrypt it to get ride of problem, as the other Drives, Encrypted or not, then become unusable!
I can see the 'WD-MyBook-1130-USB-Disk' in Device-Manager and sometimes(when I connect my WD-USB-HDD to laptop), I can see all rives, but all them is unusable.

BitLocker is stuck in: Decrypting 56% [for primary/active] drive.

Please help me.

Best regards,
Alex

I don't agree with the term "hibernate" - HDDs don't hibernate, that's an OS function. You mean something else, but I don't know what (perhaps you mean the hard disk spun-down?). Anyway, it seems that you had a problem encrypting the disk fully, and now...

... you can't decrypt the drive either. It's not surprising that BitLocker is "stuck" because the WD DLG screenshots clearly show that the drive is sick, with the symptom of unreadable sectors.

I suggest that if your data is valuable, you should consider using a reputable DR company to try to read your drive before the situation gets worse, and then hope that the incomplete encryption / incomplete decryption hasn't totally confused BitLocker.

Unfortunately this is a clear example of why you have to be careful when deciding to use encryption. If there are problems with the disk itself, it can be a significant extra challenge to recover decrypted data, depending on how the encryption software behaved as the disk was failing. :(
