Seagate laptop hdd recovery

March 25th, 2012, 15:58

Hi, I have an old HP laptop I've just rediscovered while moving house and want the data from the drive before I sell it all for parts. I have a spare casing for SATA drives, which I've used for a portable Lacie Rugged whose motor died. The pin configuration is different in the Seagate one in the old laptop and I have no idea what to search to find a USB adapter that will fit it...? I know this is clearly a dopey question from a girl who is still learning but your help would be much appreciated...

Since you say it's an old laptop, it probably has an IDE (PATA) 2.5" disk. You can look at this image (I found one of the many images on the web of this type of connector here):

Your disk's connections may look slightly different as it is common for laptops to have a small adapter on the disk's connectors, to match with the connector in the laptop itself. However hopefully this image will help to confirm that it is a 44-pin IDE (PATA) connector on the drive.

If you give the specific disk make & model (or Google it), then again, that will tell you what type of interface that disk has.

It's still possible to get USB bridges for 2.5" IDE disks, if that is confirmed as the interface type of your disk :) As always, use sensible anti-static and mechanical shock protection, when handling any disk.

Normally you have to take off the adaptor on these to expose the pins on it. Take it with you to a PC shop and have them help you install it in a USB enclosure they can do it really quickly for you on this one.

I have recently purchased this, http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-2-0-3-0-to- ... 2a17dcec92

it is quite costly but it's usb3.0 and very handy.
