Western Digital Passport 320GB WD3200-- USB Not recognised

Good Morning

I have western digital 320 GB hard usb 2.0(Thailand made ) .When I connect this to the port it gives me error usb device not recognized .I have another drive similar to this older then this but made in Malaysia swap the logic board and found out the drive is ok detecting by the pc but no data is recognized I believe i need also to change the bios chip from faulty WD .

For my faulty logic board I suspect my TVS diode has sacrifice itself can any one help me on this to trouble shoot my logic board TVS diode replacement .

You have couple of choices. Move your adaptve in ROM

Depends on this drive and model if encrypted or not would have to know about this one. Some are encrypted some are not.

check here for your TVS but this is not your problems. it is usb bridge that goes out on these to give you this problem

Here they discuess how to convert to SATA and there is photos and images on how to do it. Seach here for this to see how to find this one

Or wise move send it to PC Image there in UK and he can do this one for you at a very good price and you will get back all your data on this HDD. But you can loose it if your attempts fail to move ROM or reconfigure HDD. Best advice contact Sean at PC Image there in UK

Many users at WD's forums are reporting physical connection problems with the micro-USB socket.

This is where R&D come into play here. You need to do some good research and develope a way to do this one. On the forum there is some examples of how to do this one but if this is not your PCB it will never ever work for you on this one. Sorry. So you can keep testing and trying to figure this one out. In the end you can have one very messed up PCB or you can take all the money you have invested into this solution and pay for a recovery and get back your data.

"SOME" experience and good will is not enough. Use what you have, when you feel insecure or you do early stage damage, stop. Otherwise, assume any risk and experiment, the worse it can happen is to make drive unusable, but it's already broken.

I would attach your USB cable. Then I would check for continuity between the each pin at the host (PC) end of the cable and the corresponding pin on the HDD PCB.

You could check whether the USB-SATA bridge chip is functioning properly by carefully desoldering and lifting the clock or data pin of its associated flash memory chip. I believe this flash chip will be the IC adjacent to U12. It stores the bridge firmware. If the bridge can't find its firmware, then it reverts to identifying itself with its factory Product and Vendor IDs, ie Initio Default Controller. You should then see something in UVCView.

Hi fzabkar Thank you very much I have already check the continuty as far as cable and connector are concern they are working correctly but I suspect this Initio INIC-1608 which i have might be damage but how to check this I am in UK can i replace this .

any suggestions will be welcome.

Your pcb has imbedded rom at u5 that is unique to the drive + it has the initio encryption chip.
Sorry but DIY is not an option as you dont have the specialist tools or experience. Changing the usb to a sata using the info on this forum will give you access to image the drive but it will be encrypted data as you would be bypassing the initio chip.

AIUI, Initio's INIC-1608 does not incorporate hardware encryption.

Unless there is a chip on the reverse side of the board, it does not appear that the INIC-1608 has an external EEPROM IC, in which case my suggestion regarding the lifting of its clock and data pins does not apply.

I don't think there's much more you could do except to measure the voltages at the +3.3V and +1.35V test points on the PCB. You can find them near the vacant location at U12, near the 12-pin header. If the problem turns out to be a faulty bridge IC, then you should be able to access your data by tapping into the SATA Tx/Rx signal pairs and converting your drive to SATA mode. You will need to remove four capacitors (C13, C18, C31, C33).

BTW, I believe that pins 27, 29 and 31 of the header provide access to the serial diagnostic console. However you would need to purchase a tool such as WD HD Pro or WDR-UDMA (serial version) in order to gain access to this diagnostic port. With this tool, you should be able to transfer the "ROM" data to a donor PCB, but that's not a DIY job.

By the time he purchases all this he could of had someone do it for him. If you are in UK contact Sean at PC Image and have him do this for you. If you value your data it is a wise move other wise you will purchase a lot of tools to do this work for you and spend more money on this and have no idea how to use these tools.

If you purchase the tools you still have to convert the PCB to SATA to work with the tools. Unless you purchase the UDMA which will work with USB drives. There is a USB convertor for these drives SD sells and it cost 260 dollars. If you want the tool to use with this it cost 500 dollars. Now you have 760 dollars invested in tools to do this yourself. On top of this a new PCB is what 20 bucks in some cases or right around this. So this makes it now right around 780 bucks to fix this problem.

I know for a fact you will spend a lot less if you see Sean on this one and have him do it for you he is right there in UK and can do this one for you with no problem and get back your data for you. But please go ahead and continue on this one. Let me know if you want the tools I can get them for you.

I have been informed by someone in the DR profession that he has been able to access these USB drives via the serial terminal pins in the 12-pin header. AISI, this means that it should be possible for WD HD Pro to do the same. Therefore one should be able to read/write the ROM at U12, and to read/write the SA modules for about US$150. You may even be able to do it with Salvation Data's tools.

Just to update if this might help some one else .

I took it to my friend who is a plc engineer he replaced the TVS that is diode d1,2 Here in my case .

And I have got my hard disk back

Congratulations.

However, diodes D1 and D2 are Schottky rectifiers that function as flywheel diodes in switchmode power supplies. They are not TVS diodes. :?
