Seagate dead - please help me !

April 19th, 2012, 10:04

Hi all,

I read this forum for a while because i found here some very interesting info but now I really have a problem and hope that some of you can help me.
The problem:
- a laptop hdd with a enclosure used like external hdd.

1.I connected usb to the computer but windows said that failed to install properly the device.
2.I removed hdd from the enclosure and attached direct to sata port and started computer again. The hdd was seen in disk management as active but when i tried to initialize the disk I got message device is not ready. I tried this on 2 different computers and different ports several times till the windows can't see hdd at all.
3.I tried to see hdd in bios and also failed to recognize the hdd. I tried also some software like hiren's cd / ultimate cd etc but none of them see the hdd.

Now on power on the disk has a weird sound that i recorded and attached here. After stopping that noise the hdd feel like spinning so i think/hope is not completely dead.

The model of the hdd :

Seagate Momentus 7200.4 / 500 GB
WWN: 5000C5002A61A97A
SN: 5VJ7V5MS
ST9500420AS
PN: 9HV144-286
FW: 0003SDM1

I also attached 2 pictures of the hdd.

file sound_amr.txt is sound file but i was not allowed to upload amr files. so please change extension from txt to amr.

So please advice me what to do for recover the data from it.
Thank you in advance

By the sound i am not pretty sure, does it spin up? The sound is bad quality. If it does spin up and produce this sound, then most possibly heads are damaged.
If it doesn't spin up and does that sound, then most possibly stiction.

In both cases, buying the ttl adapter to access terminal, will not help you at all, as these are not DIY cases.

Although can't hear it as best as possible, to me it sounds more like heads or even platter damage.

If you were to send it to a professional, what would be your spending budget? Heads up - these are not cheap to recover.

To get an idea of what this work would entail, you can check member "ccc" here. He is from Romania. He might be able to help you and give a pricing idea for local work. Or there are several other good options in western Europe or US, including Northwind in Greece.

Bafta!

@labtech
Thanks!!!

@lucian_v
From the sounds it looks like damaged heads and/or possible media damage....But I can't be sure until I actually see the disk...

Hi again

Can anyone tell me or help me to get in touch with user "Doomer"? i am not able to send pm's and on the link that is on his profile i cannot find contact.

thank you in advance

l.e. after a specialist had a look on my drive (you recommended me) he said that on the plate is "magnetic dust" which means that plate/plates are scratched and he don t have right tools for trying something and close it back.

if you can point me to someone else besides "doomer" I am open to any suggestion

thanks again

That is a little strange. Because if there is platter damage and dust, then the data is not recoverable, therefore nothing else can be done.

So based on your post, not sure/not clear what the extent of damage really is if you are looking for another opinion.

Doomer is in the US.

Some other options in Europe are Northwind in Greece, pcimage in UK, etc.
