Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Got this drive in for recovery. Can read out most modules, but on some the drive spins down then back up with trying to access them. ROM and head tested fine (can write to all firmware mods without erroring up, but just can't read some).
Ordered 2 donors for hot swap, but the ones I got have the wrong firmware version. The donors were 01.03E01 and I need 02.03E02.
Should I keep shopping for a matching donor with correct firmware version for smart hot swap or do I have bads in SA?

What modules can you read from patient?
these modules are important for WD operation: 01 02 03 11 12 4A 49 40 29 36 32 31. Can you read all these?
No need to get other donor, you can make current one compatible.

Thanks for the reply. Got all of the mods you mentioned except for mod 40. Not sure if a backup copy exist on the drive...will have to examine the donor firmware mods to see.

Thought about this, but noticed that mod length was different between the donor and patient and did not know if that mattered. I guess that as long as you used the patients Map Module then everything should be ok. Will have to look into this.
