data recovery tips for seagate momentus 5400.6 250gb

Okay, normally when i kill a hard drive I just get a new one and suck it up. This time however, it wasn't mine and I need the data on it. The drive was in a patop that took a bad spill during a defrag operation. When I picked up the laptop, the system was still running fine so i didn't think much of it. When it tried to reboot, the system failed to locate the HDD. It tries to spin up then clicks a couple of times and spins down. It does this over and over, all the while never showing up on bios, windows or what have you. I requested quotes from data recovery places and I am not looking forward to blowing so much money to get this thing going again but I don't think I have a choice. The drive belongs to the deceased wife of a friend that wanted me to get the family pics and movies off of it so he can save them for his kids. i feel awfull and will try anything to get this data back. What do you guys think i can do? Here are the specs:
Seagate Momentus 5400.6 250 Gb
PN: 9HH132-031
FW: 0003DEM1

Not sure what else to provide.

i'm not sure if it's ok to post the 2 places I petitioned for cost estimates so I can get opinions but one a flat fee service including parts for data recovery and the other is a bit more expensive with a flat rate not including parts.
