WD My Essential 2TB - DATA Area is not accessible

April 30th, 2012, 3:11

Hi Folks,

I received a WD My Essential 2TB with encryption(not relevant at this stage) hard drive which doesn't identify on the BIOS.
I opened the enclosure to find the following drive: WD 2.0 TB WD20EARS-00MVWB0.

I tested it with the WD HD Doctor, DDI and Data Compass and that's the result:
1. on HD Doctor i can read the complete firmware without a problem - only CRC modules are not correct, otherwise all modules are read fine.
2. I can read the ROM without a problem.
3. When trying to access the data area and read sectors it fails and all read 6666 or 4444 on data compass.
4. on DDI, i did a media test and all heads fail with "AAAAAAA".

I executed translator re-generator and the result is still the same.
It sound quite weird that i can read the firmware properly but none of the data.

Any advise would be great as i'm quite lost here.

Thanks

Use another tool instead of SD doctor 8) . Do you have UDMA ?

Do you think its possible that the SD HD Doctor would not actually execute the Translator regenerator even though it said it did it successfully?

I don't have a PC3000, any other way to do that?

Thanks

Manually with proprietary commands but.... :(

P.S. must be an epidemy : did you check MANUALLY if translator tables WERE good and defect tables were OK before "regenerating tranlsator" ? If there is something else, it is very easy to screw data by doing it incautiously.
Also, as SD tools "sometimes" give bad surprises, CHECK CAREFULLY (possibly double check....) what was SAVED before taking any decision ;)

Bad head(s) preventing translator from operating properly.

This was what I meant for "something else" also

And this (head check) is the difficult task to do with SD tools :(
