Problem with Seagate Momentus (ST975042AS)

May 11th, 2012, 7:36

Hi Guys,

The drive spins up fine, when the heads engage the drive producing a faint clicking sound. The drive shows 'ready' in Data Compass but you cannot view data in sector view. When attemping to read from HDD reports firmware as '0002' as aposed to '0002SDM1'. The model and serial number are reported correctly.

When attemping to view sectors in HD Doctor, the drive returns '6666' error code. I am unable to access the drive's terminal, instead I am just given jibberish.

Could somebody advise the next steps i should take?

Thanks,
-DR

Does it show the correct size?
Have you tried MHDD to see if it is has a password set by the user in BIOS?
Has the user used encryption?
Bad translator?
Can your read SA & test modules?

DC is reading ID from PCB, probably says 0 LBA. I suspect heads but you should use better diagnostic procedures.

As HDD Spaz said the model and SN are read from the PCB, so the fact that you are seeing this doesn't really mean anything other than you can read the PCB ROM.
