Need your help to restore data from Samsung 2.5" HN-M101MBB

Hello Everyone,

I need help to restore data on my Samsung 1TB 2.5" SATA HN-M101MBB which has been used from time to time for backup over USB port.

One day I got shock when hdd don't want mounting anymore.

I tried couple things (under linux) like gparted and tesdisk which can recovery active partition but can't browse any data. In my meaning has been lost partition table and now can't read data. Disk still working normal and not make any noise or buzz. Disk has been format in ext4 (version 1.0). I can see all contents of data and free space but cannot read them.

I use the same disk model on my laptop with Linux Debian 64 bits and working without any problems.
I really appreciate your help.

You mean you can see the folders and so forth but cannot open or copy any files off?

Sounds like either bad sectors or a bad head.

If the data is worthless then you can try and DIY it by cloning with something like media tools pro or dd_rescue (by passing the USB).

But understand that IT IS AT YOUR RISK THAT THIS MAY WELL DESTROY YOUR DRIVE FOR GOOD IN THE PROCESS.

At THIS STAGE it shouldn't be mega expensive to get it done properly.

Thank you for replay. Unfortunately I can't see/browse nothing excluding used space and left free space on hard disk.

Without proper diagnosis we are stabbing in the dark.

Happy to take a look if you wanna send it to me. I'll try and keep the price to a minimum and be fair.

I would suggest that you examine the SMART data using smartmontools:
http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/

Look for reallocated, pending, or uncorrectable sectors. This may confirm whether the drive has physical problems.

BTW, another forum member recommends ddrescue in preference to dd_rescue.

I think that Sean is correct on this it would be wise to send it to him for recovery.
