Seagate CLICKING but operational

May 24th, 2012, 12:59

Have been working on a case involving a ST750330AS. Drive had PCB problem. Replaced faulty PCB. Drive would click constantly, but ID correctly/fully and data was readable from all heads. PC3000 indicated nothing unusual, all FW seemed good, etc. I concluded perhaps a case of weak head(s) since all were reading data.

I had used DE to create map of data area needed and was imaging only those sectors required. Drive began to click very loudly. I had most the the data, so I decided to power cycle the drive and imagined that it would not reach readiness. Surprisingly, the drive is now quiet and imaging at full speed with no noise. This seems to thwart my weak heads theory and at this point, it is strictly academic and curious to note.

Strange case indeed. ( Temporarily weak heads ) :)

Uhm.... No.

Related to the failure of the original PCB?

Interestingly I have come across 2 or 3 seagates lately that have behaved the same and have imaged while clicking,
In one case I had done a bearing swap, drive spun up, shows I'd and is clicking but still got all the data,
In the other had an issue with heads, installed new heads, you can hear a loud continuous click but still imaging

Not sure why

Got a 2tb ES drive like that now. Changed heads and it clicks like mad but still images.

Had the same case about a month ago.

Me too, with an ES. Very funny $hit :)

I had several cases before like that.

Logical explanation ?

Playing with head map in DE reveals that heads 5 & 6 read much better than the rest :-)
