Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hey guys
yesterday I tried to update the firmware of my WD drive in order to use it with my Xbox. For some reason the updated failed. So now it seems I have very limited access to the drive.
windows device manager only says "drive" without further information. I can see the hard disk with tools like MHDD or HDAT2. But I dont seem to be able to do very much with them. At one point HDAT2 says "DCO status = frozen"
There must be some kind of communication to the drive though. Like if I select erase under MHDD it apparently tries to reset the drive and yet I can hear a click sound from the drive...
is there anything I could still try to do except putting it into the trash?
thx
regards
Peter

if the hdd is detected (but locked) still i think u can use it

I uses HDD hacker with my X360USB Pro Kit...
HDD hacker sees the drive as well. It says the drive might be locked and it asks me if it should attempt an unlock which eventually fails every time...

so basically, ur hdd was OK and not locked, and u used this App to flash it and at some point it failed
then you discovered that it is locked?
am i right some how here?

If I read it correctly, the OP bricked the drive by doing a partial firmware update trying to fudge the drive to detect on an xbox.
As there is no data of value on the drive, I suggest that you give up and buy a proper drive for your xbox. Had you fully backed up all the SA tracks and modules prior to the update, it would be easy to revert back. It is not so easy now. Certainly the cost of a pro or the tools to do it yourself will be far greater than the cost of a new drive.

Or find someone who refurb drives in his area...
I have the feeling these sw make more damage than good...

before I updated the firmware, I saved the one that was on it. So now I have a file called hddss.bin with the size of 3584 bytes. Can I do anything with it? I tried to flash said bin with hddhackr but eventually I got an error 0x0802
I know it would be quicker to just buy a new drive since they are quite cheap in the first place. sitting here a half hour would probably be more expensive that buying a new drive.
but still I would like to try to get it to work, just out of curiosity...

Out of curiousity i upgraded my 4gb xbox with a 120gb wd bevt drive tonight to test.
The process is straight forward & worked fine on mine.
Firstly did you download the correct hddss.bin ie the 320 one?
Secondly did you create an undo.bin
If so have you tried using hddhackr -r to try to restore it?
If that works then you can try again.
As far as i can see from your pics they dont show the drive make, model or serial details. In bios what does it see the drive as? The reason i ask is that mine changed from displaying wd to fujitsu. When i fitted the drive into the xbox i went to settings & formatted it.

peter, have you found any help?.you and i have similar problems..

With the disposable nature of hardware these days, I'd just replace it.

DCO frozen state is not an issue at all. It's one of the normal states of a drive

what if its disabled?..what impact on the drive would that have?

OK, but I can not create a partition any programs.. error inputs / outputs ?? Drive is somehow locked (?) it is not password?

When I want to create password/erase by mhdd - "fail", scan - "! ABRT", create partition - "no access error inputs/outputs"

when you go to issue commands on it ata commands sata commands etc etc, does it actually let you?.or do you get that annoying beep when they fail all the time every-time?...i have a wd3200avjs..so im very curious to your problem. Mhdd wont see mine at all. my bios sees it as all zeros on every single attribute,Hdat2 sees it as a PCI device with 0 bytes....i wonder if the WD3200 line of drives was just a pig in a poke?
i did find this and wanted to share it..its a list of just about every single (and free) hard drive diagnostic tool out there. perhaps there is something there than we havnt seen or tried before that can give us some help...have you tried HDDhackr?..ive been reading how it has a feature that lets yo rebuild certain features/functions/attributes by hand...is MS-dos based like everything else.
http://alternativeto.net/software/smart-utility/i apologize if im not allowed posting this here..if i am in the wrong please tell me and i will remove asap.

@KOBRA000
Sorry, only now I noticed your reply

Yeah, all sectors/attribute is locked. I've tried all applications even those you suggested. BUT!
I dont know how it works HDDHacker - is he doing a backup?
I search FAQ on this program in the end he breaks the xbox drives.
In Poland 15-17y boy... unlock these drives, I do not know how he does it.
However, these drives are set to zero - so running hdparm? but I dont want to set up a password, dont know why hmm
