my 40gig WD400j drive lost all data. bios sees only 4gb, windowsXP does not see any capacity at all and just wants to format the drive.
tried to plug it into another computer and using different cable. does not work.
tried mhdd .wdctrans command. nothing happened
SMART scan on mhdd gives this result

what to do? im a dummy if its about hardware, and its my dads drive. has some important data on it

That SMART reading does not seem accurate. Either was not read from the disk at all, which I doubt, or the SMART part of the firmware is corrupt.
What complete MDL drive is that? And does it click at all? Have notice any slower performance/data access issues before failing?

before fail nothing was slowing down normal reactions. i did the smart test on 2 mhdds. 1 was a floppy disk, the other one was iso img on cd. both downloaded from the main website.
what does mdl mean?
and what clicks do you mean?
sorry, im not a hardware techie

MDL= model, located on the label on the drive
Clicks = meaning drive behavior/noise coming out of the drive once powered on.

Magnetic heads assembly can be replaced by a professional if data is important.
As long as there is no media damage, there is always a chance.
