I have a Samsung HD103UJ, manufactering date 2008.1 PCB rev04 that suddenly just died in a working pc after giving one tiny ticking/pitching sound. Other harddrive in the system is working fine. High class power supply and ups, so probably no power peak.
I doesn't spin anymore, when giving power after 5 - 10 seconds it does some low sound clicks and stops but no spin. (no arm and motor movement) The largest chip on the pcb get warm, very warm after a couple of second.
I have the same Samsung HD103UJ (8 more) but with a later manufactering date 2008.4 and with PCB rev05.
I already replaced the PCB with one of the other drives and the drive spins up again but isn't recognized in the bios.
If I replace the bios from the old pcb, is there a change it would work, or don't bother trying? Are there other sollutions?
I have only one 8 pins chip on the board if i read correct with nummer SP30L-EZ749 on it, is this the one to replace?
If some experienced people would give me a hand it would be great, thank you

These samsung have the rom inside. Not a DIY, sorry.
De rom zit in de controller ingebakken. Hier kan u helaas niets zelf doen.

Thank you for the response. The controller is it the Marvell (largest chip on the board)? I have a heat gun but the Marvell is glued. What is the 8pin chip on this board then?
No pcb live swap or exact hdd (same batch) possible?

Hi,
I think that 8-pin chip is a power regulator (dont have a pcb here to verify).
In your case i would change the motor controller (the chip that is becoming very very hot), but without the proper equipment it is a very difficult task.
Pcb live swap will not help and even a pcb from identical drive is no guarantee it will work. There are many versions of the firmware around and you need an exact match for it to work. (if there are no other problems)

The chip that gets warm is the Marvell (big chip) not the motor controller (smaller chip), I also measured the diodes but they are ok. (no short circuit)
It's a pitty that the data is still on the disks but because of rom difference I cannot get the data. I try to look for one of the same batch (some pcb rev and exact same Marvell number is that enough?) and if that isn't working, the data isn't that important but i would be nice i get it back.

There are other parameters also that even i am not totally aware of.

I found a drive I can buy with PCB rev04 to give it a try but with some other info on the Marvell chip (the YPM and the first 4 numbers of the thirth line are different), also the manufacturing date is also later. Does somebody now if this is important.
I already tested with mine other drives to exchange the pcb (rev05 and with the same thirth line nummer) and that worked successfully.

I have bought the spare drive with the same pcb revision but with a later date, it didn't work because of the difference in firmware (drives spins but isn't recognized in Bios).
I'm looking for the exact same drive, i'm not in a hurry, I also looking for someone that can repair the drive but for a reasonable price.
I don't mined paying someone for there experience and hardware but some companies charge premium prices (only for this specific problem - no cleanroom and spare pcb/drive delivered) for something that takes 20 minutes (I have seen the how to movie from salvation data).
