Segate Barracuda 7200.11 motor driving for unstucking it

August 3rd, 2012, 5:41

Hello, i've a barracuda 7200.11 with stucked motor.
I was thinking if it's possible to unstuck it without opening the drive.
My idea was to give in some how more power to the motor, modding the pcb or creating an external circuit on bread board to power supply the motor.
I found on internet some interesting project which they show how to give power to the motor with an external circuit, for example:
http://letsmakerobots.com/node/2898

If i give more power in some how, only for few seconds, maybe i'll able to unstuck the motor!
What do you think about?

The priority should be safety of the data. For me, brute force a seized motor is rarely safe. Also, as there are several safer alternative methods I think it is not a great idea...

For experiment i could try on other hard drives which i don't care about saved data.
Any idea how to modify the pcb to give more power to the motor?
Example changing the mosfet FDFS2P102A with a more powerful one...?

This question is for good electronics technicians, or even better for some electronics engineer 8)

Which alternatives methods?
You mean platter swapping?

And replacement of broken spindle.

Fammi sapere, ciao.

Hello BlackST, i sent you some PM's a few weeks ago to know if you can restore the barracuda 7200.11 with stucked motor and also for the WD5000AAKX with slow sectors issue, and to know their prices, but I have not received a reply.
Let me know, bye.
