Magnetic Data technologies MD02500-AVDW-R0

Hello gurus!

A few days ago I knocked my HDD off my desk while I was trying to copy some work files from it. When I plugged it back in it was making a ticking noise and not showing up in bios. I'm quite good with technology so I opened it up and saw the discs were stuck to the arm and couldn't move. I turned the disk by hand a few times to loosen it up and when I pulled the arm away from the disks I knocked the top one slightly and a little bit came off. (See attached picture)

I was just wondering if there was a specialist type of glue to piece these back together or if I'm just supposed to use super glue or something? I would normally let it be but I'm paranoid that the files I need are going to be on that missing chunk!

No files are recoverable. Can't read data from that disk anymore. It's done.

Highly suggest you do not power that drive on. It will shutter into pieces. You do NOT want to hurt your eyes or anything.

A pro should be able to recover from the bottom disc as long as it is not too damaged.

you do realize that data is not written from platter surface to platter surface on wd's. like a JBOD raid

The data writes jump form surface to surface almost like a striped array. So unless his entire drive is filled with tiny files, he is not getting anything from that drive.

do not give him any hope. Chalk it up to a DIY failure and move on. The data is gone.

No, Its not like a raid and 8 sectors stripes. These write very large chunks per surface. 50% is better that nothing. Customers pay for these all the time.

It was not a direct comparison I was making, I know it is not chunks exactly the same, but the chunks are not large either going from surface to surface on a WD laptop. Unless the customer is only looking for thumbnail pics across the drive that are tiny in size then maybe, and that is a big maybe, he can get something. But even if you can read that one platter , being 50% of the drive, I can almost guarantee less then 5% of the data would actually work correctly that you recover, even less of a percentage for data the client actually wants.

If you are confident then you should offer your services to the OP to get the data. I would be intrigued at the conclusion.

There are two platters
if bottom platter is not damaged it is possible to recover data from it, convenient part here that the bottom platters is also an SA platter
However majority of DR companies do not offer such recoveries

Judging from the pictures it is a WD Venus/Denali/Cougar drive (WD WXE serial number)
Probably holding about 250000 sectors per minizone

Based on your experience Doomer, what is the cause of this? i mean platter in 2000 pieces?
you its not easy to break it in such way?

If you drop this drive on a concrete floor the result might be very much alike
I've seen shuttered platters before on Fujitsu and Toshiba drives

Excluding the Dropping, do u think this might happen by any other reason?

you know, its tight with screws on the middle, the only issue am thinking about is if those screws are not tight well
and the hdd spins on 5400rpm with unstable condition.

right?

that's very unlikely
if those screws are not tight enough then the spindle will spin but platters won't
