Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hello. I am trying to recover data on a Samsung HM641JX USB external HDD.
I need to connect with two ports to get it to light the blue LED and then it fails to be recognised by the OS (Win7) which gives the error message "USB Device not recognised One of the USB Devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it". The drive is spinning and sounds OK.
Any suggestions please?? Thanks in advance.

Have you already removed it from the case and conected directly to a PC?

Hello thanks for your reply. Yes I have opened the case but in fact the connector (micro USB) goes direct to a PCB on the HDD.

I think you are slightly misunderstood...

You should get this properley diagnosed by a professional, but my initial thoughts are that there is some internal short circuit somewhere in the USB bridge or the PCB itself.
Again, without proper diagnosis this is just a guess..

Thanks yes I suspect a power supply problem but as you say I will get a professional to attempt a recovery. Thanks for your time Cheers
