HDD reading problem

Hello,

excuse me if I post on the wrong page, but i'm new here. I have a WDC WD10EALX-089BA0 for about a year now and i use it for storage. I run Windows XP SP 2. It all went fine until I noticed that the reading speed decreased. I observed this when I tried to play HD movies, 720 and 1080. What seams to be the problem? I know the OS is old, but I didn't encounter any problems until now.

backing up is not an option, because it contains more than 600 GB and I don't have where else to store them. Please tell me another way to find out what's wrong whit it or just tell me what may the possible causes of this behavior.

axelanti SAjunky already gave you two programs to diagnose the drive ! What is the make and model ? You can download hddscan from hddscan.com to check the SMART if any are yellow or red the drive is failing.

Yes it can be. hddscan is a simple SMART info reader it wont stress the drive. The full scan will stress the drive depending on the condition of the drive it could fail at any time. If you don't have a backup then ask yourself "why" data recovery is way more expensive than a $100.00 1TB drive which is why everyone suggest a backup before testing a drive that may be failing its just common sense and the safe thing to do. So what does hddscan show ? results

if you do not backup your data you are ALWAYS in the risk of losing it. Hard drives can fail at any moment. I would take heed and go out and buy a backup hard drive and backup all the data to it just in case. Data recovery is far more expensive then buying an external 1tb hard drive... or a 750gb.

600gb of data is a lot and I am pretty sure you would hate to lose it. You are in a good situation now since you can access the data. take this as a warning to back it up.
