Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

I have a Western Digital Passport that is giving me some issues.......
My wife had this attached to her laptop when it went south. It is showing as 0 bytes and is asking to initialize the drive. I have been reading the forum trying to find an answer and saw that R-Studio was recommended. I have downloaded the demo version and now when I select the drive the "scan" button is greyed out.
So now the questions....
Is there any way to initialize the drive without formatting?
Would this help in being able to recover the data?
Why would the scan button not be active after I have selected the drive?
Is there any way around this to try to get R-Studio to recover the data?
Thanks for any help or suggestions!

This problem may be a hardware failure, which you can't fix (or recover) using software. This is supported by the fact that the scan button won't function with the drive.
At this point, data recovery is your best bet.
