one partition just went missing; nothing wrong with others

November 5th, 2012, 12:43

i just had a hdd failure (well, at least partiton failure). i am using arch linux.
Code:
$ uname -a
Linux 3.4.9-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Aug 15 18:59:31 CEST 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux

the hard drive is 1tb usb 3.0 wd externel drive (sdc). hd was already plugged in, its first partition (i.e. sdc1,ext4) mounted when the problem happened. i was working, nothing that io to sdc1. then i realized sdc1 is no longer mounted. i tried to mount it,but the command took at least 1m untill i ^C it. there is no uuid entry in /dev/disk/by-uuid/

partition list:
Code:
$ fdisk -l /dev/sdc
/dev/sdc1            2048  1843202047   921600000   83  Linux
/dev/sdc2      1943218176  1953458175     5120000   83  Linux
/dev/sdc3      1843202048  1943218175    50008064    7  HPFS/NTFS/exFAT

i tried to back up it using dd, but that failed too.
Code:
$ dd if=/dev/sdc1 > /mnt/sg/fs
dd: reading '/dev/sdc1': Input/output error
0+0 records in
0+0 records out
0 bytes (0 B) copied, 5.56793 s, 0.0 kB/s

i am not sure that it got locked, because every other partions is working.

There is some contradiction between the drive's view of the problem (only 1 logged unreadable sector - SMART attribute 197 raw value) and the various Linux I/O error messages which refer to many other parts of the disk.

The "obvious" unreadable sector is LBA 2048 which is the first sector in /dev/sdc1 and that is why your dd attempt failed immediately. The other I/O errors reported by Linux could be due to poor I/O error handling by Linux drivers, or the behaviour of the USB-SATA bridge (these often have error handling issues), or something else which should preferably be diagnosed by someone who has the drive in front of him. Either way, that contradiction in reported errors exists, so the real situation is not completely clear. However - do NOT try to run fsck or similar, on any disk with unreadable sectors, like yours. It can make things much worse.

There are a few different possible DIY approaches, but as with any DIY, they have risks, especially for the inexperienced. I believe that WD enclosure (and in your case therefore probably the drive's PCB itself) has "Smartware" built-in encryption, so it's likely that you can't avoid using the USB interface for any attempted DIY recovery.

If the data is valuable (i.e. you don't want to risk it), I suggest that the services of a DR company experienced with these WD drives, would be worth you considering. However if you prefer to take risks, and are prepared to accept the consequences of your actions, then search the forum for discussions about cloning (if you're comfortable with Linux then read about GNU ddrescue, for example), for which you'll need (at least) another 1TB of unused disk space (personally I would use 2 x 1TB disks in a specific technique in this situation to try to minimise risks, but some people accuse me of being over-cautious and spending more on temporary disks than is necessary :) ). Do lots of research first, to reduce your chances of making a mistake. That cloning process (if it completes) will also confirm how many user LBAs are unreadable using normal techniques, as part of the cloning process.

If you're lucky, then recovery from the readable clone can then be attempted. If you're unlucky and the disk deteriorates during cloning (or if you make a catastrophic mistake), then the recovery becomes much harder or impossible.

As always, remote diagnosis accuracy is limited and the results often incomplete, but these comments are an overview of how I see your situation, based on my interpretation of the information supplied. Others may interpret your comments differently and offer alternative views. Ultimately it's your data; your risk; your choice.
