Seagate ST31000528AS doesn't work any more. Help me

December 6th, 2012, 18:09

Hi folks,

My hard drive where i have put a lot of personnal data does not work any more
And i would like to know what to do and see if it's possible to recover some data.
That's why I need your help

The drive is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 - 1TB - 3,5"
ST31000528AS
Firmware = CC37
PCB Sticker = 4778K
PCB = 100536501 REV A

The drive is at the origin in an external box (Seagate Expansion)
One day the disk is neither recognized by the Bios not by Windows

When i plugged the drive directly with Sata cable or by USB the drive makes clicking noise
then he shuts down.

I have recorded the sound of the hard drive when I plug it.
(Please read the file enclosed "ST31000528AS.mp3", if the sound is bad tell me and i will retry to catch the sound)

To analyse the issue I have ordered the same PCB in USA (Hdd donor) and I have try the new PCB
The issue is the same.

According to you what the issue come from ?
Head issue, platter issue...

Do you think it's possible to fix it ? just to get my data still inside ?

What do you advise to me ?

Best regards

Hi pcimage,

Do you think that's it's head according to the sound recorded ?
How much do you think it's heads ? 90% ? 100% ?
How much a such intervention can cost to me to get the data back ?

I have made an other test with the new PCB i have received from Hdd Donor
I have not noticed but the behavior of the disk is not the same when i plug it (via USB)

With the new PCB the clicking noise are slower
then after the 12 first clicking noise and a quick moment, the drive start again and the motor continue to turn
With the old PCB the drive shut down after the 12 clocking noises

Find enclosed the sound of the drive with the new PCB

What do you think about that ?

Thanks

99% certainly bad heads.

Unfortunately recovery on these with bad heads is very tricky and hence expensive.

I wouldn't expect you'd get much change from €1000

None of the above.

If you need the data and can't afford it, best to save the HDD until you can afford it

it's very horrible to loose 1Tb of data just for a head pb

If it is head problem and require head swap,
then 245€ is a reasonable price .
It is a Pro job.
DIY or cheap alternatives will ruin the drive or make recovery later very costly.
Store the drive properly and get it recovered later when you want and have the resources.

Hi sathyan, all

the drive is not mine but to my sister
The issue is that she won't want pay 245€ for a pro repair

So there is no need to store the drive properly.
I will never have the resources to pay a pro job...

I will prefer cheap alternatives to have a chance to get the data back (not all the 1Tb)
but i don't know what can be the cheap alternatives for a head swap

245€? The donor part would probably cost 100€ when specific requirements between patient and donor are needed...
