Hitachi 0A38016 Continuous beep click

January 16th, 2013, 14:30

spins up, continuous , regular beep click - does not stop.

no visible damage to PCB components, have not checked with meter.

Suspect possibly not reading firmware due to damage to platter or heads being retained?

Manufactured DEC 2008 . S/N MH0TUG3B

Any suggestions? thanks.

Stop powering the drive on and do a visual inspection of the drive in the clean room. You are probably correct in your analysis.

Not having a clean room nor the inclination to build one or a clean box/enclosure/booth, I explained to the customer the likely cost of recovering the data. He decided to wait until he could afford to have the work done .

The only non invasive thing I could think of doing was to loosen the two screws holding the actuator and axis and see if it frees up. Discretion being the better part of valor I decided it wasn't worth risking further damage .

Thanks for your help.
