Fujitsu (Apple) 160GB SATA Drive MHY2160BH

Hello,

Was hoping to find some help on the HDDGURU Forum.

A friend of mine asked me to try and recover data/pictures (not extremely critical) from a damaged hard drive (photo of drive label attached to thread, click photo to enlarge/read).

I connected the drive to my Window 7 Pro 64 PC using a sata/power cable from the mother board to see if it would recognize the drive (it did not).

I downloaded the Fujitsu/Toshiba Windows Diagnostic Tool Ver. 1.12 (For IDE/ATA/SATA Hard Drives) from here:

Upon running the utility the drive was recognized. I proceeded to run and Extended Test and received the following Error:

Two options:

a) Do not power up the drive anymore and consult a pro to recover the data. At THIS point, and without further tinkering, it shouldn't cost an arm and a leg. This is the safest option, assuming data is important.

b) Do it yourself, accepting the risk that in case something goes wrong, data could be lost forever or recovery would cost x times more (if it is still possible to recover). Since this is not your data, but someone elses, I suggest you ask them to call the shots. If your friend accepts the risk of DIY, then search this forum for ddrescue and follow instructions. You need to image the drive using some non-windows utility (ie. ddrescue or similar, you will find a lot of similar threads) that has the ability to handle imaging of a sick drive, and then recover the data from the image.

There is always a big chance that plan b) will fail. Then you go to plan a), but then things may have gotten worse.

Appreciate the info, and have requested my friend to monitor this thread.

For option A: Any reccommended service providers as well as expected costs?

For option B: this may be a good fit as the data is not critical and could be a good learning experience for when trying to recover critical data from a drive in the future.

B) Well if your friend agrees and understands that he/she may lose their data for ever, then you're good to go.
