Segate hard drive not recognized how to recover data

Dear Experts

My one year old laptop Asus after updating its ultimate windows 7 OS and restarting it , a blue death screen appeared,,,tried couple of restarting same error message.

Then tried : Safe Mode ,,,,,tried : last good configuration,,,,,,,,,,nothing work.

Removed the hard drive which is Segate 500 GB from Asus laptop and connected via USB cable to my desktop,,,the error message that was presented : You need to format the disk before using it.

Tried that on another laptop (Dell) same error message : You need to format the disk before using it.

External hard drive is not showing in the computer management means it is not recognized as an external storage therefore I won't be able to use any third party program to recover the files before formatting it

What should I do to recover the files and data from my Asus hard drive before formatting it ?

Clone drive and scan clone with a product such as R-studio. If data is vital- seek a pro and you will see your data again.

How can I clone it if it the hard disk can't be recognized ?

Hard disk is detected , hence you got this message.

Your hard disk may be failing or having bad sectors .
Cloning the drive is the best option you have as DIY.

But DIY has its risks and there are chances that DIY attempts may make the drive to totally fail and compromise your data.

If you have critical data , take pro help, it shouldn't cost you much in this state.

Else(as warnerr suggested) you can try connecting the drive directly to the SATA port of a PC and clone the drive to another working hard disk of similar or larger capacity. Then run recovery tools like R-studio on the clone to get your data.
First,Check if it is correctly detecting in the BIOS .
Next , use ddrescue to clone the drive

Connect it directly to sata chanel on a desktop computer, start it up and enter BIOS, check if the drive is present....if it is, clone the drive as suggested before.
If it don't appear in windows you can not clone it with R-studio...then you need a non os depended SW and clone it in DOS
