WD Elements 500GB USB 3.0 - works for a few minutes

February 14th, 2013, 10:53

Dear Fellow Techies,

I have a WD USB 3.0 Elements drive of 500GB.

When I plug it in, it get detected, I can load the directory in UFS explorer, but while trying recover files disk fails after recovering a few files.
the last files it recover during an active session is having missing area as well.

It seems Bad sectors or media error.... But my question is how can I make the drive alive during the whole recovery?
is there any way to make it alive, because it seems that the drive protects itself by going offline when it detects an error..

welcome your valuable suggestion..

Thanks in advance..

Not without the relevant hardware.

USB add-in for Deepspar Imager, or convert the drive to SATA (then deal with the encryption)

Hi there. Have a WD15EADS out of a Elements enclosure. Have data on the drive that I need to get off in a hurry. Hooked it up via SATA and spent hours trying to figure out what I was doing wrong before learning all about the wonderful encryption WD uses.

The card inside is Apollo D1U/D1B, 4031-705059 Rev AG. The USB connector broke off. I'm not super great with a soldering iron, and these leads are TINY.

I stumbled across another post on this forum that said you might know how to deal with this problem. Is there a program or something I can use to decrypt this drive or emulate this little apollo board?

If not, do you know where I might find a replacement connector, or what the proper name for the connector is? I imagine it has to be less than the $26 I find the replacement board on auction sites for.

Thanks for any help!

or what the proper name for the connector is ?

Micro usb 3.0

Is there a program or something I can use to decrypt this drive or emulate this little apollo board?

Try to fix the old board (Easy to fix connector with proper tools) or get a identical working board.

Do you know where I might find a Micro USB 3.0 connector meant for soldering on to board like the WD controller? I've never had to buy a component before, not really sure where to look for a decent price. I would also need a fine tip for my soldering gun, I just assumed go to Radio Shack for that, assuming they still sell electronics stuff.

I heard there may be a way to decrypt the files. Is there a program or something I can use to decrypt this drive or emulate this little apollo board?

Thanks!
