WD2002FAEX 2TB Cavair Black - No Power.

February 19th, 2013, 5:57

Hi,

I have a WD Caviar Black that has gone faulty. It was occassionally able to detect but now it will not power on.

I have checked D3 and D4 with D3 being fine and D4 faulty. Is it the same as a WD GreenPower HDD and remove either one and should be able to power back up again? I know I did this with the WD GreenPower on my previous post and was able to recover my data this way. Just need to know whether it's the same for this particular model HDD.

I think it's time to buy some new HDD seeing they all seem to be going bad...

Model: WD2002FAEX-007BAO
Date: 21 SEP 2011
DCM: HARCHV2AA
DCX: 300073WB8

Thanks in advance! :)

If the TVS has failed , the CPU will not power on (when connected directly to the PC).

So if the TVS is removed, the drive may power on but will still be occassionally detecting.
You will have to diagnose the problem and clone the drive ASAP.

And as w.simon suggested, time to invest on a good power supply

After further inspection, i noticed the foamy bit was sticking and thought it might have been some glue so i didn't go taking it off further until I was i the process of removing D4... the SMOOTH chip has blown one of its legs clean off.... :O

any ideas as to where I can buy spare D4/smooth chip?

Easiest to take one from another PCB.

Any ideas as to where I can get a replacement PCB and what I would need to match the PCB correctly?

Hello

You can found the pcb on the net, on this forum i seen 3 place where you can get this one.
I ll not tell who they are because i don't want to make favoritism for one to an another one.

Just look in the :

Board index » Hard Disk Drives: English Forum » Hard Drive Market

But just know it would not work like this out of the box, you ll have to write rom in the new pcb to make the drive working again.

2 options desolder resolder marvell chip to swap it
regenerate rom from SA, require tool for that ...

And assuming there are no dommages inside the drive, the new pcb if head is bad can burn again the new pcb...

So think at the cost, put a value on your data and if recovery cost to much just buy a new hdd, that will cost same or less that try to fix / recover this drive.

Anyway Good Luck
